NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN
Weathervane circa late 19th century
The Indian was always associated with the origin of tobacco. Used as a trade sign for tobacco merchants and later as a weathervane in the late 19th century. Handcrafted from antique heart pine salvaged from a barn located in upstate NY circa 1890. The headdress is made from antique copper and cut and cold worked on an anvil. Yellow mustard buttermilk paint is applied to the costume in numerous layers to give piece an as-found crusty appearance. The antique tin and copper was salvaged from an out building located on a farm in Ithaca NY. The piece is hallmarked and mounted on a metal museum mount for display.
