19th Century Weathervane
A universal symbol of fertility and wealth, the cow is one of the world’s most respected domestic animals. They are a valuable component of the economy. As milk producer’s they symbolize the nourishing earth. Weathervanes with cow motifs are, of course, most prevalent in thriving cattle-farming districts. Handcrafted from heart pine salvaged from a 100 + year old Upstate New York barn. Antique copper flashing is cut and formed around edge of cow. Iron is heated and hammered on an anvil to form the tail. Cream and red buttermilk paint is applied to object to give a well-worn look. Piece is hallmarked and placed on a metal museum mount for display.
