LADY FEEDING SHEEP
Whirligig circa 19th century
This simple and articulated whirligig depicts a sheepherder’s wife feeding their livestock. This piece exhibits wonderful grace and form. When the prop is turned, the lady’s arms move up and down and, in turn, sets the sheep’s head and body in motion. Handcrafted from antique heart pine. Cream, pewter gray, mustard yellow and green buttermilk paint is applied in multiple layers and then removed to develop a dry, crusty as-found appearance. Antique iron and copper is applied as well. The piece is hallmarked and placed on a metal museum mount for display.
